Lake Van is by volume the world’s fourth largest hydrological closed lake (607 km3)and by area the world’s largest soda lake (3570 km2). Situated on a high plateau inEastern Anatolia, it is surrounded by active volcanoes within a tectonically activeand climatically sensitive area and belongs prehistorically to the Fertile Crescent.Lake Van’s annually laminated sediment records cover potentially 500’000 years. It is considered a jewel for high-resolution palaeo-environmental, palaeo-climaticand palaeo-tectonic research, which will be investigated in the near future bythe ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) project “PalaeoVan”. Before past environmental conditions can be examined, it is substantialto understand recent annual particle and sedimentation processes, how they arelinked to environmental conditions and how they are reflected by the lithologicalcomposition of the varves. This thesis combines two disciplines in order to obtain this knowledge: remotesensing and limnogeology. Three complementary types of data sources are used:satellite images, sediment traps and sediment cores. [...]
