The metaphor "storm”, applied to political, social and psychological processes, is often negatively connotated. In the natural sciences, storms describe complex physical processes free of normative views, while in art, they often refer to positive events which lead to new insights. These different meanings of the same word may indicate the difficulties in interdisciplinary work. Currently, a disciplinary career remains the ultimate choice for young scientists, because interdisciplinary work still does not receive full academic credits. Therefore, the Swiss Academy of Sciences should promote institutions engaged in interdisciplinary research and encourage a critical size of suitable peer reviewers. With its bilingual culture, the city of Fribourg was an ideal location for the 183rd congress of the Swiss Academy of Sciences; a congress which focused on one metaphor – that of storm – to catalyze an interdisciplinary dialogue.
