Light utilization efficiency and quantum yield of phytoplankton was investigated in Lake Cadagno (1923 m a.s.l., southern Switzerland) during summer and autumn 1986. Considerable changes of the phytoplankton species composition occurred from summer (July, August) to autumn (September): the proportion (in % of total algal biomass) of the green algal flagellates decreased, that of diatoms increased. In periods of thermal stratification light utilization efficiencies, E., as well as the quantum yields, ᵩ, increased linearly with depth due to photoadaptation processes. The maximum quantum yields, ᵩmax, in the summer period were considerably higher than those determined in autumn probably due to possible changes in the phytoplankton species composition.
