The conversion of biomass to energy carriers like CH₄ through CO methanation reaction is a desirable route towards development of efficient energy production/conversion systems. The CO methanation reaction is highly exothermic and due to the high CO partial pressure in the inlet of the reactor, huge amounts of heat should be removed. For this reason, gas-solid fluidized-bed reactors have been applied in recent years. In this work nickel-based catalysts supported on mechanically stable materials were tested for CO methanation. The influence of slicica nanoparticles and diatomite on the mechanical stability was studied. Silica nanoparticles significantly improve the mechanical stability on the final catalyst, but also has a negative effect on the activity for CO methanation. The results show that catalytic and attrition resistance properties make of Al₂O₃ the best support material so far.
