One of the most energy-efficient alternatives for building envelope applications is the use of phase change materials (PCMs). The PCMs addressed simulation tools, classification, integration technologies, and influence variables, together with the benefits and drawbacks of the widespread adoption in building envelopes, which were highlighted hierarchically. Consequently, this work may propose a literature review of passive cooling benefits from PCM integrations in buildings, particularly in tropical or extremely hot climates. According to this review, the literature that was presented did not cover the understudied occupant intervention, which would be more crucial for ventilation. Future research should continue to take into account hydrothermal, optical performance, sustainable coconut, palm, or beeswax, visual comfort and moveable PCM-based interventions in hot regions. The variation in PCM performance in passive cooling is exacerbated by the lack of future climate analyses and payback period assessments in case studies. Ultimately, future analysis allows scientists and specialists to evaluate PCM effects associated with hot climates, particularly for modelling, potential future climate change interventions. This may be aided by presented technologies, impact factors from unresolved disputed points, or single-centred study focuses, but not just those related to the tropics.
