Characterizing the fatigue performance is of importance for fracture mechanics based design of high performance structures made from fibre-reinforced polymer-matrix composites. For Mode I tensile-opening load, a fatigue test procedure has been derived from the standardized quasistatic Mode I test, namely ISO 15024. This fatigue test procedure has been successfully applied in a first round robin test involving several European research institutions and further round robins on Mode I fatigue testing are currently under way. For Mode II shear load fatigue, test development can not be based on an existing quasi-static ISO standard. A variety of Mode II test set-ups have been proposed for quasi-static testing. The present contribution will explore and discuss the suitability of the so-called Calibrated End-Loaded Split and of the so-called End-Notched Flexure tests for the development of a Mode II fatigue delamination resistance procedure. Essential criteria for fatigue test development are, as in the Mode I development, the applicability in an industrial test environment, simple test set-up and data analysis. From the experience with Mode I fatigue testing, the procedure is first applied to a carbon-fibre reinforced thermoset (epoxy) laminate, in order to avoid the inherent instability of delamination growth observed in some high-performance thermoplastic composites.
