Timber bridges with decks made of laminated solid timber panels are usually protected against mechanical abrasion and humidity with a mastic asphalt pavement. Recent laboratory tests suggested that the pavement may have a significant effect on the stiffness and damping of a footbridge. Currently, however, in the design of footbridges, this asphalt pavement is considered as an additional dead load. Since vibration serviceability is often the governing design criterion, neglecting the effect of the asphalt pavement may result in uneconomic design or poor performance. Furthermore, in the temperature range considered in the design, the storage and loss moduli of asphalt changes by orders of magnitude. These large variations may also affect the performance of a footbridge. This paper addresses this topic and demonstrates that footbridges with asphalt pavement are subjected to significant changes of natural frequencies. The effect of the asphalt pavement on damping turn out to be much more difficult to understand.
