Due to their high CPU requirements, Large-Eddy simulations (LES) are not the preferred tool in most cases in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In contrast, the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is affordable, but it fails in complex wall-bounded flows. Thus, near-wall modeling of LES is adopted to reduce the computational cost and still be able to describe the most significant flow details. This wall modeling is achieved by engaging both RANS and LES in different parts of the domain. In the present work, hybrid LES-RANS simulations are performed using two different hybrid models. The first one is algebraic Wall-Modeled LES (WMLES) that uses implicit RANS mode based on Prandtl mixing length. The second model has an explicit RANS formulation based on k-ɛ-ζ-f mode. The goal of this paper is to investigate the capability of the two hybrid models to capture the profile of Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) at the wall vicinity. Since channel flow has always been a model problem for validation of wall-bounded turbulent flows, it was chosen to compare predictions of both models against Well Resolved LES (WRLES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data from the literature. Results are reported for a range of Reynolds numbers i.e. Re_τ = 395, 590, 1000, 2000 and 18000. In addition, the implemented algebraic model is compared against its modified version in the ANSYS Fluent code. A detailed comparison is conducted to reveal robustness and predictive potential of each hybrid model. The next step in the ongoing research is to utilise Hybrid LES/RANS methods to predict particle transport in particle-laden flows. As a preamble for this, a Lagrangian Particle Tracking (LPT) was implemented in the in-house code, T-Flows. The algorithm was verified against the commercial package ANSYS Fluent for laminar flows. Future work will involve the implementation of a Lagrangian particle transport model in the WMLES approach and comparison against predictions by DNS and WRLES.
