The SLS 2.0 project aims to provide optimum conditions for research with synchrotron radiation at PSI, thus continuing the success story of the present SLS facility. Operation of the SLS began in 2000 and it quickly became one of the most successful synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide, providing academic and industry users with a suite of excellent beamlines covering a wide range of methods and applications.
In recent years, major advances in the design of synchrotrons and insertion devices have made possible an increase in the brightness of X-ray beams by substantial factors. In parallel experimental methods, detector technology, data acquisition and processing capabilities have evolved, thus permitting one to use this increased photon beam brightness for the benefit of higher spatial resolution, larger samples and faster measurements at the beamlines.
To maintain the SLS at the forefront of synchrotron user facilities and to exploit all of the improvement opportunities mentioned above, PSI prepared a major upgrade project for SLS, named SLS 2.0. The financial resources for realizing SLS 2.0 are provided in the ETH council finance plan for the 2021-24 finance period, which was approved by the Swiss parliament in December 2020. The overarching SLS 2.0 objective is to increase the quality of research rather than the capacity. Therefore, the number of beamlines remains, after the upgrade, similar to the present SLS. [...]
