CFD-grade experiments were performed using the University of Michigan's HiRJet facility for the validation and further enhancement of CFD RANS model for the simulation of stratified fronts propagation. Experiments were performed with density differences of with 1.5%, 2.3% , 3% and - 1.5%. The propagation speed of the stratified front and the thickness of the stratification layer were determined from high-resolution density distributions, which were measured by a wire mesh sensor, and subsequently compared to the results from RANS simulations. The results from the k-€ RANS simulation show that the thickness of the stratification layer is over predicted both when the lighter fluid was injected into the heavier fluid (1.5%, 2.3% , 3% density difference) and when the heavier fluid was injected into a lighter fluid (1.5% density difference). The propagation speed of the stratified front instead is under predicted when the lighter fluid was injected into the heavier fluid (1.5%, 2.3% , 3% density difference) over predicted when the heavier fluid was injected into a lighter fluid.
