High-resolution neutronic codes aim at the accurate prediction of safety related parameters on both local and global scales. VVER cores include complex geometrical structures, which cannot be modeled explicitly by deterministic codes despite their strong impact on the safety relevant physical phenomena. This work aims to study the modeling performance of the deterministic high-resolution code nTRACER for VVER geometries. The X2 VVER-1000 benchmark is used to validate and verify nTRACER with experimental and simulated data, including Monte Carlo reference solutions. The necessary approximations used by nTRACER to successfully reproduce the benchmark solutions are presented in this paper. The impact of the modeling options is illustrated on the global (assembly) and local scale (pin). At Hot Zero Power conditions, the agreement between nTRACER and the reference solution is RMS=0.9% in terms of pin power difference (axially averaged) and 37 pcm in terms of eigenvalue. The goal of this paper is to study the capacity of nTRACER to model a VVER-1000 core, define the necessary approximations and pinpoint any strong shortcomings of the code which would then need to be addressed to improve its capabilities.
