In the High Burn-up Structure (HBS), a depletion of the noble Fission Gases (FG) in the matrix, an increase in the µm-sized porosity and an accumulation of FG in the pores can be observed. The influence of the HBS is limited under normal operation conditions but it can gain importance under transient conditions. The HBS has been investigated with respect to the FG distribution and behavior, experimentally by applying appropriate analytical techniques, as well as theoretically (modeling).
