The paper presents recent progress in boiling flow simulations using Interface Tracking Methods (ITM) within the framework of computational fluid dynamics. ITMs such as volume-of-fluid and level-set methods capture liquid-vapor interface configuration, and heat and mass transfer at the interface are directly calculated based on the conservation equations. Thus, simulations using ITMs are considered more reliable and less uncertain than those using Eulerian approaches, which typically employ empirical correlations. In Paul Scherrer Institute, we started to develop an ITM for boiling flow in 2008; nucleate pool boiling from a single nucleation site was simulated in the early days, followed by boiling from multiple nucleation sites, in which micro-layer is treated by a subgrid-scale model. In this paper, we first present micro-layer forming process, for which Direct Numerical Simulation is applied with fine computational grid less than micron in size. The computed results, e.g. bubble shape, heat-flux distribution on wall and micro-layer thickness, agree well with the experiment, and a criterion between the micro-layer forming and non-forming (contact-line) regimes is proposed; a micro-layer is formed if the bubble expansion velocity exceeds the velocity of dewetting. Second, we demonstrate three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulations for subcooled convective boiling flow at high pressure (80-150 bars). The finest computational grid evaluated in a grid dependency study (26 µm) is not small enough to achieve grid convergence, but the simulation results are qualitatively consistent with the experimental results, e.g. increase of heat-transfer coefficient with increase in system pressure. At the end, boiling from heated wall with non-uniform hydrophobicity is presented as a more practical application.
