The spruce bark beetle Ips typographus (Linnaeus) is the most damaging insect attacking Norway spruce, Picea abies Karsten, in Eurasia (Christiansen & Bakke, 1988). Recently, the beetle has also caused great damage to the forests of the Southern Italian Alps (Minerbi et al., 1998; Ambrosi et al., 1990; Lozzia, 1993). The traditional control measures included traps and trap-trees baited with aggregation pheromone, but Italian literature provides very limited information about the different techniques of control (Ambrosi et al., 1990; Lozzia, 1993). However, the diversity of the Italian forests compared to the North and Central Europe stands may suggest possible differences in the efficiency of the same trapping system. The aim of the present study was to estimate the total number of bark beetles caught by different trap-tree types, compared to pheromone trap captures in different seasons.
