We present evidence from organellar DNA for the postglacial reimmigration pathways of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and white oaks (Quercus spp.) into the Alpine region. In Norway spruce, organellar markers revealed an East-West immigration, whereas in Swiss oak populations, chloroplast DNA variation indicated two separate geographic origins and putative migration across the Alps. The spatial pattern of genetic variation in Norway spruce can be related to the mode of inheritance and the respective dispersal via pollen/seed of organellar DNA.
