This study evaluates the risk of mass movement processes for the Upper Sulden Valley, South Tyrol, ltaly, using Geographical Information Systems. Our research draws on concepts that were first applied in the assessment of technical hazards. The applicability of these concepts to natural hazard research is tested. In addition, process models are applied to estimate potential damage related to mass movements. Our results indicate that the conceptual approach used in technical risk analysis can be successfully applied to the assessment of natural hazards on a regional scale.
