Slope stability is monitored using inclinometer pipes in a steep scree slope in alpine permafrost terrain. The slope was artificially modified in 1997 through the construction of steel snow-supporting structures. Ground temperature measurements in boreholes indicate that the unmodified part of the slope has a warmer thermal regime than the area affected by the structures. The warmer part of the slope has also been subject to more deformation. The unstable layer of ground in both boreholes coincides with a layer of unconsolidated scree and fines overlying the stable bedrock. Snow cover distribution is monitored and the snow-supporting structures have induced an increase in snow depth, which delays snow melt in summer. The physical presence of the structures does not enhance slope stability at the ground surface, but they induce a cooler thermal regime in summer and thus reduce creep rates within the scree.
