More than one thousand samples from 6 basins in the Alp valley of in central Switzerland were tested in an exponential model of the form L=b.Q2 for relationships between flow rate Q and nutrient load L. The nutrients considered were NH+4-N, Na+, K+, Ca++, Mg++, CO--3, SO--4, Cl- and NO-3-N. Most showed slight to obvious dilution effects, NH+4-N a slight increase with flow. The dilution pattern foreach nutrient is discussed and possible explanations in terms of the basin characteristics are given.
