In 1988 the National Forest Inventory (FI) reported comprehensively for the first time on the structure and state of Swiss forests. It proved that, because of very high harvesting cost, only two-third of the sustainable growth is exploited. Various assessments show that 40-70% of the potential yield of energy wood is not used. The federal program "Energy 2000" aims at doubling the entire supply of the country's energy wood by the year 2000. A  survey among cantonal forest offices and forest owners revealed that forest management seeks to increase the  supply of forest energy wood by 40%, thus increasing the importance of Swiss forests as an energy source.
