The effect of late summer pollarding on a broadleaved tree can be identified by wood-anatomical means. The methodical basis for identifying the practice of leaf-foddering is shown using ash from the Swiss canton Valais. Evidence of such foddering methods represents an important contribution to the reconstruction of agricultural history.
