The storms "Vivian" 1990 and "Lothar" 1999 struck many parts of Western and Central Europe, felling millions of cubic meters of timber. The windthrown spruces are an attractive breeding material, especially for Ips typographus. In Switzerland, the usual practice to clear all damaged areas in time is no longer feasible. Therefore, priorities have to be set. How do we minimise clearing and control measures but still prevent widespread attacks of bark beetles in neighbouring stands? Which parameters have an important influence from the epidemiological point of view? Can monitoring of bark beetle populations, natural enemies, drying process of breeding material, and weather conditions help us to take decisions? New projects will search for answers.
