The Swiss National Forestry Inventory (NFI) periodically records in detail the current state and changes within the Swiss forest, in a representative and reproducible manner. NFI1 was done between 1983 and 1985, NFI2 between 1993 and 1995. Currently NFI3 is running which will be finished in 2007. A particular task within the NFI is the complete acquisition of the forestry road network. Precise knowledge regarding the state of, as well as changes in, the forestry road construction is an important planning tool for forest tending and harvesting. For NFI1 and NFI2, the road geometries and corresponding attribute data have been stored as coverages. Advanced GIS-database technology (SDE), as well as more demanding user needs, required a new design for the storage and retrieval of the forestry road network within NFB. This paper presents the design and implementation of a spatio-temporal data model, based on SDE, which enables effective and efficient multi-user editing and exploration of changes of road network geometries and their attributes. A key element of the design is the use of SDE multi-versioned views. This feature enables access to current versions of different users, from both ESRI and third party client software.
