An epiphaniometer, which measures the aerosol Fuchs surface concentration continuously was run parallel with a high-volume sampler, a low-volume filter device and a cascade impactor at a prealpine station (Mount Rigi, at 1020 m a.s.l.) for about a year. A good correlation was found between the epiphaniometer signal and the aerosol mass concentration in the accumulation mode (aerodynamic diameter <2.1 μm) as well as with the sulfate concentration. The agreement with total suspended particulate matter (TSP) was worse, especially during episodes with long-range transported Saharan dust. Diurnal variations revealed the importance of up-slope winds during daytime for all seasons, emphasizing the usefulness of combining detailed but non-continuous aerosol investigations with continuous aerosol measurements.
