Hochwasser in kleinen Einzugsgebieten verursachen in der Schweiz, wie generell im alpinen Raum, jedes Jahr grosse Schäden. Aufgrund der Datengrundlage, welche den Einsatz von Modellen in der Regel nicht zulässt, wird in der Praxis für die Dimensionierung von aktiven und passiven Schutzmassnahmen meist auf Abschätzverfahren zurückgegriffen. Über 10 Verfahren wurden in sieben kleinen Einzugsgebieten getestet und mit statistisch extrapolierten Abflusswerten verglichen. Aufgrund der Resultate wird für die Ermittlung einer massgebenden Abflussspitze vorgeschlagen, ein Set von 5 Verfahren zu verwenden. Der Vorteil dieses Vorgehens liegt in der Berücksichtigung der Unsicherheiten der einzelnen Verfahren.

The determination of peak flood discharges in small torrential catchments relies in many cases only on simple estimation formulas as flood record data is not available and application of simulation models is too expensive. Many such estimation formulas have been proposed by different authors but a systematic testing in small catchments was not carried out in Switzerland up to now. In the present article the results of tests carried out for more than 10 such formulas are described. The tests were carried out with runoff data from seven small torrential catchments with areas between 0.5 and 3.5 km² for which time series between 25 and 95 years were available. More than 50 % of the tested formulas had to be classified as unsuitable for estimating peak flood discharges in small torrential catchments. As no single formula is reliable under all conditions, an approach combining the five most reliable estimation formulas is proposed for future peak flood estimations.
