The research deals with two methods for the determination of mean annual growth. Both methods consider only conifers (spruce and fir) which occur in mixture with beech in the 3000 ha forest district of Schneegattern north of Salzburg in Austria. Method 1, for the age class 40-120 years, gives a mean annual volume growth of 7.2 m³/year/hectare with a standard error of 8 per cent. An optimum ratio of photo/field plots of ^3n₂/_n1 = 2827/34 was calculated for a given cost ratio of 1/100 for these plots. From the data of 1969 a regression of Y = bx (Y = volume m³/0.05 ha. x = √c, c = crown closure per cent) was calculated from 34 (0.05 hectare) sample plots, and a volume from ^3n₂/₃ = ²⁸²⁷/₃ = 942 photo plots was obtained in 1969 using this regression equation. In 1974, using the same 942 plots, the volume was similarly calculated. By combining the 1969 and the 1974 photo plots under the stereoscope, the volume of the cuttings in these five years could be calculated.
The second method, for the age class 80-120 years, gives a mean annual volume growth of 7.7 m³/year/hectare with a standard error of 16.7 per cent. The volume
was calculated for 63 plots in 1969, and for the same 63 plots in 1974. The volume of the cuttings in the five years was obtained again by combining the 63 photo plots of 1969 and 1974 under the stereoscope. The volumes were calculated using a regression of Y = b₁ + b₂x (Y = volume in m³/tree, x = crown diameter per tree in m) which was calculted in 1969 from 610 single trees.

Es werden zwei Volumenzuwachsverfahren beschrieben. Beide Verfahren wurden auf Fichten und Tannen beschränkt, die in Mischung mit Buchen auf einer Fläche von 3000 ha im Forstbezirk Schneegattern nördlich von Salzburg, Österreich, stocken.
Das erste Verfahren ergab für die Altersklasse 40 bis 120 Jahre einen mittleren jährlichen Massenzuwachs von 7.2 m³ pro Jahr und Hektar mit einem Standardfehler von 8 Prozent. Ein optimales Stichprobenverhältnis Photo/Gelände für das gegebene Kostenverhältnis 1/100 wurde berechnet, ^3n₂/_n1 = 2827/34. Für 1969 wurde aus 34 Stichproben (0.05 ha) eine Regression Y = bx (Y = Vorrat in m³/0.05 ha, x = √c, c = Kronenschlussgrad in Prozent aus Photos) berechnet, und damit wurde 1969 der Vorrat in 942 Photoprobeflächen bestimmt. Für 1974 wurde der Vorrat in denselben ^3n₂/₃ = ²⁸²⁷/₃ = 942 Photoprobeflächen ermittelt. Diese wurden ebenfalls verwendet, um die Nutzung (entsprechend den verschwundenen Kronen auf dem 1969-1974-Stereobild) in den fünf Jahren zu berechnen.
Das zweite Verfahren ergab für die Altersklasse 80 bis 120 Jahre einen mittleren jährlichen Zuwachs von 7.7 m³ pro Jahr und Hektar mit einem Standardfehler von 16.7 Prozent. Für dieses Verfahren ist der Vorrat 1969 in 63 Stichproben und 1974 in denselben 63 Stichproben berechnet worden. Dementsprechend ist die Nutzung in den 63 Probeflächen für die fünf Jahre berechnet worden. Für die Volumenbestimmungen
wurde eine Regression Y = b₁ + b₂x (Y = Volumen in m³/Baum, x = Kronendurchmesser aus Photos, in m) benutzt, die 1969 aus 610 Einzelbäumen ermittelt wurde.
