In times of frequent natural hazard catastrophes the demand is increasing for safety in all areas. Here, the focus is directed to rockfall, landslides and avalanches and debris flows. Flexible steel canopies are an economical and environmental friendly alternative to concrete galleries as rockfall protection of roadways in mountainous regions. The system is designed to self-clean for impact kinetic energies below a threshold value. Below this threshold a trampoline effect takes place and the impact rocks are deviated by the system (Escallon 2014). The dynamic stiffness and material damping of ringnets were studied numerically. Additional tests were performed to validate the model. The parameter influence of the ringnet diameter, winding number, pretension and dimensioning of the total system was studied for the “self-cleaning” behavior of the system. Mostly influenced are the ring net, cable and the energy absorbers. The goal is to initiate a very low degree of plastic deformation in the dissipating devices.
