The current economic system is paradoxical: growth is supposed to create jobs, and increasing labour productivity is supposed to contribute to this, but at the same time it results in jobs being lost. So growth must also replace the jobs that have been lost through "rationalisation". This paradox is exacerbated by the social welfare and tax system, which has formal employment as its key source of financing: this drives forward increasing labour productivity. But economic growth cannot continue indefinitely. It is therefore important to diminish the role of formal employment - in social security, and as a source of public revenue, social recognition and integration. At the same time, an understanding needs to be developed of what it means to be meaningfully active, one which includes not only formal employment but also self-determined work, voluntary work, care and community work and other forms of work, and this understanding needs to be promoted and spread by and through our societal institutions.
