Fibrous ice is a form of frost in soils. The fibers grow in the underlying melt and are pushed upward. The habit is sometimes described as hexagonal prisms. This could in general not be verified, and an analysis with the universal stage showed that the optical axis of the crystallites lie preferentially perpendicular to the direction of growth and so to the temperature gradient. This is an anomaly in the growth of crystals from a melt.
