Data on forest fires on the southern side of the Alps were recorded both in a databank system and a Geographical Information System. Through combining the two systems it is possible to display complex relationships in simple form and visualize them as maps. Using the region of Morcote as an example, the spatial distribution and origins of fires, as well as the dominant tree species in the areas affected were studied in detail.
