The section Vegetation of the SFIFR is establishing a survey of the main forest communities of Switzerland. This survey will replace the publication «Waldgesellschaften und Waldstandorte der Schweiz» by Ellenberg and Klötzli (1972). Beyond floristic methods, the estimated stand height is very useful to distinguish and ecologically interprêt vegetation units.
