In this study, a unique and extensive dataset was compiled that documents quantities of recruited and transported large wood (LW) during flood events. The dataset further includes various catchment and event specific characteristics that were used to derive empirical equations for estimating LW loads in Alpine mountain rivers and torrents. Power law functions were found to be the most suitable to describe the large scatter of LW volumes over several orders of magnitude. The results show that catchment area, sediment load and peak discharge are the most influential parameters to estimate LW transport. The empirical equations presented here provide a simple and quick tool to make an initial estimate of the magnitude of the LW load within a catchment. From a practical point of view, these estimation methods can serve as a basis for flood protection measures, such as the adequate dimensioning of wood retention structures.
