Per molti, durante una passeggiata in bosco, l'esperienza più eccitante è proprio costituita dall'udire il suono da loro prodotto, simile a un rullo di tamburo, o dall'individuare le tracce e i fori lasciati nei tronchi degli alberi dal loro becco. I picchi sono specie chiave portano elementi indispensabili al biotopo di altre specie animali. Il loro aspetto attraente ed il loro modo di vivere ne fanno ambasciatori eccellenti dell'ecosistema forestale. Per questo possono svolgere un ruolo di sensibilizzazione del pubblico alle interazioni ed ai problemi che si verificano nel loro biotopo.

This publication gives an overview of all woodpecker species living in the forests in Switzerland and includes recommendations for forest practitioners and conservationists. Illustrated descriptions of each species introduce the reader to the biology, habitat needs and current situation of all woodpecker species in Switzerland. In the second part, the authors recommend a number of applied conservation measures for preserving and improving woodpecker habitats in different forest types.
