In March 2001 the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL started a 3-year project to study the causes of the decrease of capercaillie populations during the past decades. The results, namely the actual population estimates and distribution pattern of capercaillie habitat will be used to develop a model to predict metapopulation dynamics of capercaillie in the Swiss Alps.
