Erosion and weathering processes within the superficial soil area are crucial in view of unstable slopes and gullies. The protection of the soil surface, therefore, is an important part of the stabilization measures. This article points out the application of pioneer plants and soil bioengineering techniques for a sustainable development of a protective vegetation cover. Furthermore, new research results are presented from the field of mycorrhiza within the scope of plant root development and the effect on aggregate formation and soil stability.
