The biogeographical classification now completed employs a purely statistical approach, based on patterns of distribution of flora and fauna, and adapted to communal boundaries. The basic classification, comprising six regions, provides a foundation, as specified by SAEFL, for current and future nature protection projects covering the whole of Switzerland. This basic system is supplemented by a more refined classification subdivided into ten regions.
