The Swiss population's perception of hurricane Lothar and the measures taken to meet its consequences were among the main topics researched by means of an nation-wide telephone survey. The survey was conducted in the German and French-speaking areas of Switzerland nine months after the storm.. The results show clearly that the storm was an important event for the population. General satisfaction was registered concerning the handling of the consequences by the forest authorities, however deep concern remains with respect to the possible repetition of such an event in the near future. Nonetheless, the storm did not trigger a change in individual behaviour. The Swiss population favours an increase in the use of the renewable resource timber.
